This work began with a herringbone tessellation folded from transparent overhead projector film — a material historically associated with transmission, instruction, and ephemeral image-making. When placed in direct sunlight, the folded surface refracted and redirected light, casting shifting geometric shadows across the surrounding space. These temporary shadow forms became the central subject of the work.Rather than preserving the sculptural object itself, Cecily photographed the shadows created by the sunlight interacting with the folded film. The resulting image was then photocopied and mounted to board, translating an immaterial and fleeting event into a fixed physical trace. Through this process, the work moves through several stages of mediation: from light to shadow, from shadow to photograph, and from photograph to photocopy. Each transformation introduces a subtle loss of clarity while simultaneously producing a new form of presence.The work considers light not only as illumination, but as a carrier of time, atmosphere, and memory. The shadows exist only momentarily, dependent on the angle of the sun and the conditions of the space, yet the photocopy acts as a residue of that encounter. By reducing the original luminous event to a flattened monochrome surface, the work reflects on the tension between permanence and disappearance, asking how transient experiences might persist through acts of recording and repetition.
