The moon doesn't generate her own light. She catches it, holds it, and gives it back slowly over days and nights and months. That is what drew me to her as a subject when I was making this piece. I had been thinking about how my own energy moves in cycles rather than in straight lines, how there are phases of brightness and phases of quiet withdrawal, and how neither one is a failure. The sequins and beads on the surface of this work do something similar. They catch light and scatter it differently depending on where you are standing and what time of day it is. She was never meant to glow on her own. She was made to receive light and reflect it back in small, scattered ways, which feels true to how I experience being a person in the world.
